Week Twenty

Marathon Running – #327

My girlfriends just completed another half marathon here in North Carolina, that’s 13.2 miles, a long haul.  I was listening to them chatter / giggle about the hills and how tuff this particular 1/2 marathon was for them.  It was both  high in altitude and elevation.  They all finished.  A great accomplishment!  One of my friends then switched gears in the  conversation and asked me how on earth did I finish the Grandfather Mountain Marathon many years prior, with  higher elevation, tuffer terrain and altitude, plus an additional 13.2 miles for a full 26.2 miles up a steep mountain slope.  Woow.  It was a bittersweet marathon for me as prior to that race, my dearest friend who I was  training with  lost her husband three weeks prior to the race. She asked me to run the race with her (it was for me an honor) We ran and we finished!  (Thank you Coach Bubba (Bruce)  for pulling us up those hills).  I couldnt help but then go in search for my race  number, “327”  Grandfather Marathon finisher!    Searching through my race numbers and medals I  reflected on my favorite 10 races:

1) The first marathon, # 1152, Raleigh, Fulcrum, December 3rd, 2000

2) Yes, the second marathon, # 655, Raleigh, December 2nd , 2001

3) The Myrtle Beach Marathon, #2211, those folks down there play music all along the route.

4) The Charlotte Thunder Marathon, #1064, (my son ran me in on that freezin, November day)

5) The Miniman Duathlon, #331 (a major birthday and celebration with my friend Peg)

6) Mother / Daughter 5K, #17, Cullahee, NC (y’up ma beat daughter, sorry Kristi)

7) Race for the Cure,#6777
