I first read this book, The Portable Coach, by Thomas Leonard, founder of Coach University in 2003, and multiple times since then (dare I say I bought the audio version too, for those long solo runs). It is a book that taught me to break several negative patterns and is my favorite book about how to create an environment designed for my personal self. The first chapter was a tuffy! “Become Incredibly Selfish” yes not a natural behavior for me. Here are three of my favorite take-aways from this chapter
1) Selfishness, “does not mean being a jerk” it is defined entirely differently in the book. For my take-away it ultimately allows me to me more generous, supportive to others and not being defined by other people’s definitions/projections. A few examples of this would be, I have learned to say No to volunteering, overloading with tasks that have in the past created burnout, and have learned to created space for my personal growth.
2) Extreme Self-Care, doesn’t not mean being selfish either, to me it means to stay away from negative people, or folks that do not hold my core values at heart. My take-away here was to reduce stressful situations, reach out to experts who can help me with my emotional, physical, financial health and design a home environment that I love, surrounded my good books to read.
3) Creating Daily Rituals, also doesn’t mean being selfish. It means finding the time to do the things that are important to me, i.e., exercise, read, and spend time doing the things I want to vs what others expect.
Selfishness = Selfulness!
