January 20, 2021 – Inauguration Day – A day I enjoyed making History!

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn in at the US Capitol. Harris made history as the first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president.
Amanda Gorman’s Inauguration poem – “We are successors of a country and time where a skinny Black girl descended from slavery and raised by a single mother”

Time for change and hope!

Week 9, 2018 – Poetry, Funeral Blues

The TV was full blast with Billy Graham’s funeral services this week. In honor of a remarkable man. I watched and watched as people honored him, to include President Trump. It reminded me of this poem, Funeral Blues, and my sadness of when my father died. One man honored, publicly and one man honored privately, same impact?

Funeral Blues

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message ‘He is Dead’.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good. W. H. Auden

Sabbath Poetry – True Happiness

“Sabbath (/ˈsæbəθ/) is a day set aside for rest and worship. According to Exodus 20:8 the Sabbath is a day of rest on the seventh day, commanded by God to be kept as a holy day of rest, as God rested from creation.”

“Happy are those who reject the advice of evil men, who do no follow the example of sinners or join those who have no use for God. Instead, they find joy in obeying the Law of the Lord, and they study it day and night. They are like trees that grow beside a stream, that bear fruit at the right time, and whose leaves do not dry up. They succeed in everything they do” Psalms 1-3 #whispersinmyheart

Phenomenal Woman – This Girl Can!

I fell in love with this woman, #MayaAngelou Poet, Guru, many, many moons ago. I was so thrilled to hear one of my favorite poems/ video “This Girl Can” on British TV. Poem Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

They think I’m telling lies.

I say,

It’s in the reach of my arms,

The span of my hips,

The stride of my step,

The curl of my lips.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

I walk into a room

Just as cool as you please,

And to a man,

The fellows stand or

Fall down on their knees.

Then they swarm around me,

A hive of honey bees.

I say,

It’s the fire in my eyes,

And the flash of my teeth,

The swing in my waist,

And the joy in my feet.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered

What they see in me.

They try so much

But they can’t touch

My inner mystery.

When I try to show them,

They say they still can’t see.

I say,

It’s in the arch of my back,

The sun of my smile,

The ride of my breasts,

The grace of my style.

I’m a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,

That’s me.

Now you understand

Just why my head’s not bowed.

I don’t shout or jump about

Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing,

It ought to make you proud.

I say,

It’s in the click of my heels,

The bend of my hair,

the palm of my hand,

The need for my care.
