I was introduced to Firelies by “Kya, the “Marsh Girl” in the novel, “Where The Crawdad Sings” by Delia Owens. This little girl lived in Barkley Cove, a quiet coastal town in North Carolina during the 1960s. She lived there, alone since she was about nine, in her shack, for years, ever since her entire family left her behind, one after the other. Kya, timid, shy, had no social skills but became one of the most renowned naturalist in the area and teaches us through the book about the wonders of little creatures, grasses and birds of the North Carolina coastline. I revisited the book again this year as it reminds me of my love for this coast and our favorite island, Bald Head Island, BHI, which we have loved for its natural beauty since 1995, but like Kya’s home town of Barkley Cove, NC, BHI has been discovered by many and become more commercialized, but still beautiful, especially in the off-season. The book (a must read) has a unusual turn of events, revealed in her last poem about The Firefly!

“Luring him was as easy
As flashing valentines.
But like a lady firefly
They hid a secret call to die.

A final touch,
Unfinished;
The last step, a trap.
Down, down he falls,
His eyes still holding mine
Until they see another world.

I saw them change.
First a question,
Then an answer,
Finally an end.

And love itself passing
To whatever it was before it began. A.H.”

Super Bowl 2021 (LV – 55)

History was made during Super Bowl 55, February 7, 2021, Kansas City Chiefs (9) vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers (31), as Tom Brady, in full Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, Jr., (born August 3, 1977, San Mateo, California, U.S.), American gridiron football quarterback led his teams to a record seven Super Bowl victories (2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021) and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) five times (2002, 2004, 2015, 2017, and 2021). But for me one of the most memorable events was one of the commercials, Jeep reminds us we are stronger than the obstacles in our way, and invites us to remember all the ways we are connected as Americans. Bruce Springsteen takes a timeless CJ-5 on a journey to the US Center Chapel in Kansas in search of common ground. #JeepTheMiddle

Week 5, 2021 – The Self Care Wheel

I was reminded this week, the importance of self-care while struggling with not knowing what the future holds after learning of the deaths of three dear friends in the UK. So, when I feel unsettled or antsy: I pull out my old book the portable coach and start revisiting the topics: “Sensitize yourself: do something very special for yourself each day; Well-being: identify and eliminate numbering substances, i.e., alcohol, tv, and exercise! Energy/Vitality: Get plenty of sleep each night; know my cholesterol, health counts, etc; are they in the healthful range? have something to look forward to each morning. Safety: know what to do if I am threatened, mugged, or attacked; are my smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in good working order,” and the learning and questions go on throughout the book. Am I taking good care of myself? So, this little book, the portable coach and the self care wheel help me in the midst of uncertainty. I hope they help you too!

January 20, 2021 – Inauguration Day – A day I enjoyed making History!

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn in at the US Capitol. Harris made history as the first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president.
Amanda Gorman’s Inauguration poem – “We are successors of a country and time where a skinny Black girl descended from slavery and raised by a single mother”

Time for change and hope!

Week 3, 2021 – On my way to Santiago!

This week I’ve started my virtual walk, pilgrimage, across the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James). “The Camino de Santiago, known in English as the Way of St. James, is a network of pilgrims’ ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saints are buried there” It is known to changed lives, and many say they meet St. James along the way! Although, walking it virtual is not the same as being there physically, under these circumstances, but still it is such a wonderful experience looking at the photos of the villages and reading about it’s history. My pilgrim’s passport will show you I have walked 10 miles of the 484.7 mile pilgrimage walking, starting at St Pied de Port, walking through the villages of Hunto and Orisson. I do hope I can get there next year and meet Saint James!
